Your small business is the result of dreams, a handful of ambitious ideas, a lot of aspirations and elbow-grease-hard-work. But having great products or services are only one component of a small business. Clients and customers need to know about you, your company, and what you can offer. You need to promote your business, retain existing customers, and attract new customers. While a marketing strategy might sound expensive – paid ads, promotions, videos, creative copy, CRM platforms, AI tools – it doesn’t have to be. Here are some effective marketing strategies for any small business on a small business budget.
Tell Your Story
Whether it’s on an About page, social media platforms, or business listings, it will include basic information regarding your company – contact info, products you sell, services you provide. Everyone likes a how-did-you-get-here victory tale. Be factual, yes, but don’t be afraid show your personality, demonstrate how your business is unique, and describe the inspiration that started you on your particular path.
Promote Your Business
Take the time to add your business to online listings and directories. Many listings are free. Even if you decide to pay, the ROI is immeasurable. When potential clients find your company on a listing or directory for the specific product or service they are searching for, you are enhancing your online visibility and improving your chances of new customers visiting your website. Include as much information you can - products/services being offered, price range, e-mail address/mailing address, website, phone/cell, etc. Here are some suggestions to get you started:
Yellow Pages
Yelp Business
Better Business Bureau (BBB) – you can create a free profile but to be fully credited by BBB a company must meet specific standards
Google Business – profile can include posts and photos
411.ca - a Canadian search engine owned by Yellow Pages; if your listed with YP, it should also appear in a search on 411.ca, but check to make sure
Another budget-friendly way to promote your business is to maximize the impact of your profile on social media platforms. It’s a chance to tell your story to potential customers – don’t give them a grocery list; write something that will grab their attention and at the same time let them know who you are and what you do.
Local Targeting Strategy
Social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Instagram, and Tik Tok allow you to pinpoint your geographic area. This means you can select a specific city, neighbourhood, or the radius around your brick-and-mortar store, targeting potential customers and clients of your products and services locally rather than globally.
Before planning to place ads on social media, check to see if there is a minimum daily spend requirement. A few do not list a minimum dollar amount – even if you budget for $5 a day, in a year, you get exposure that will translate into new customers.
Make the Most of Your Posts
Pictures of your products or announcements about upcoming sales are great. However, connection – establishing rapport and sharing common experiences – can be a more effective way to promote your business through your posts. Use social media to create a community and engage with your audience. You can achieve this in the following ways:
Share behind-the-scenes reels
Share photos and reels of specific events – a book/product launch, a tour of your factory, a name-the-product contest
Make videos that are lighthearted and funny, demonstrating the playful side of your company
Post creative videos of your products
Promote events and announce contests/giveaways
Optimize Your Website
SEO, the process of increasing your ranking on search engines, is important. The more diligent your search engine optimization efforts are, the higher your company name will appear in related keyword searches. Use terms like “best [product name] store in [city], or “interior designer near me” or “boutique Vancouver downtown.”
Optimize your website for mobile devices. Make sure website content automatically adapts to different screen sizes. Website design should be responsive and fast-loading.
Add backlinks from social media posts, blogs, and business listings to your website.
Customer Reviews
Customers are the lifeblood of any business. Listen to their feedback, concerns, and especially any criticisms. Ask them to give you a review on platforms such as Yelp, Google, and the Better Business Bureau. Ways to utilize customer reviews include:
Adding the best reviews directly to your homepage, services page, or landing pages
Using reviews in your social media posts
Including reviews in paid ads
Highlighting reviews in email campaigns
Demonstrating you appreciate your customers and value their feedback by responding to the review (it’s that connection thing; building trust)
Use Storytelling in Your Copy
Anywhere your copy appears – on packaging, in product descriptions, on social media, and in email campaigns – must be consistent with your brand. It also has to get your customer’s attention and retain it. Storytelling is an effective marketing tool because, unlike stating facts or providing information about products and services, it creates a narrative flow that inspires connection, reaction, or a change in perspective (heart), rather than an intellectual response (mind).
